# How book rules apply

> Understand which accepted narration pairs a book rule covers.

Each rule records a specific **Narration heard → Manuscript** pair that you have accepted for this book. It does not accept every similar phrase or pronunciation.

| What to check | Why it matters |
| - | - |
| Wording | Check the full phrase on both sides. A different phrase may need a separate decision. |
| Punctuation and accents | Review these in the saved pair if an expected match is still flagged. |
| Direction | Put the transcribed narration under **Narration heard** and the book text under **Manuscript**. |

## Example

A rule for **“street lamps”** under **Narration heard** and **“streetlamps”** under **Manuscript** accepts that reading for this book. If Margent flags a related phrase, listen to the audio before deciding whether it also needs a rule.

## Both sides need text

You cannot create an equivalence rule with a blank narration or manuscript value. Apparent additions and omissions can still be [resolved as no change needed](/qa/no-change-needed) without saving a rule.

## Existing decisions stay decided

Editing or removing a rule changes future proofing. It does not reopen findings you already completed. [Manage the rule](/equivalences/manage-rules) and reopen a completed finding separately when needed.
