# Play an excerpt and find its timecode

> Listen around a finding and locate the passage in your recording software.

1. Select the finding or pickup in **QA**.
2. Check the filename and timecode beside its audio tools.
3. Choose **Play excerpt** to listen around the available audio position.
4. Use the player to pause, scrub, or change playback speed when you need more context.
5. Choose **Copy timecode** to copy the displayed position.

Use the copied timecode with the same source file in your recording software. Editing or replacing audio can move the corresponding passage to a different time.

## Pickups from an earlier recording

A pickup marked **From previous recording** keeps its original source and timecode. Its excerpt belongs to that earlier recording, even when the chapter header names a newer file.

## If an excerpt is unavailable

A manual pickup may have no linked audio position. Use [Go to line in Studio](/studio/go-to-line) instead. If linked audio fails to load, use **Refresh audio** when shown and try again.

If copying fails, select and copy the visible timecode directly. For positions marked **Approximate position**, listen around the timestamp rather than expecting an exact word boundary.

**Next:** [Make a finding decision](/qa/review-finding).
