# Understand reading pace

> Use words per minute as a guide to the chapter recording.

Reading pace appears beside the current recording in QA when reliable timing information is available. Open **Details** to see the average and the book’s target range.

## What the number measures

Pace is shown in **words per minute (WPM)**. The measurement includes pauses and retakes within the reading and excludes leading and trailing silence.

It is a recording-level guide. **Below target**, **Within range**, or **Above target** compares the average with your chosen range; it does not decide whether the performance is good or whether a particular line needs a pickup.

## Change the target

1. Open the recording’s pace **Details**.
2. Choose **Edit target**.
3. Enter a minimum and maximum WPM, with the minimum below the maximum.
4. Choose **Save target**.

Use whole numbers between 30 and 400. The target applies to all recordings in this book. The initial 140–170 WPM range is a suggested starting point, not a delivery requirement.

Changing playback speed while listening does not mean you have changed the original performance.

If no reliable pace can be calculated, Margent shows **Pace unavailable**. See [what to check](/troubleshooting/pace-unavailable).
