# Proofing failed or needs attention

> Retry a saved recording and identify what still needs checking.

**Proofing needs attention** means processing has not completed successfully. It does not mean the chapter has no findings.

1. Read the error displayed with the chapter’s processing status.
2. Confirm the current recording is the intended file and the selected manuscript section matches it.
3. If **Retry proofing** is available, choose it and wait for the new processing status.
4. If the file is damaged or incorrect, export a readable chapter file and [replace the recording](/recordings/replace).
5. If the manuscript has changed, follow [Manuscript changed after proofing](/troubleshooting/manuscript-changed).

## If processing is still running

Once the upload has finished, you can leave the page while proofing continues in the background. Avoid treating an empty queue as a completed review while processing is queued or running.

## If retry fails again

Keep the visible error, chapter title, source filename, and the time the failure occurred. These details help whoever supports your installation distinguish an audio problem from a service or setup problem.

If the file never finished uploading, follow [Recording not processing](/troubleshooting/recording-not-processing) instead.
